Why I chose Thai tatami mats for sound massage practice

Audrey Besson, formation massage aux bols tibétains

I have been practicing sound therapy with Tibetan singing bowls for over 10 years. I first learned this art in France and later expanded my knowledge through various trips to visit shamans in Asia (Malaysia, Indonesia). It requires skill and good tools. While it is common to think about the quality of the bowls and mallets for the practice of sound therapy, did you know that the tatami mat on which we practice is equally important?

Tibetan singing bowl therapy is a massage technique in which several bowls are used to massage and relax the person. For this, the client lies down, and bowls are played around them, either placed beside them or directly on the body. It is the vibration of the bowls that allows the person to relax, but it also helps to achieve a global rebalancing of the body by acting on the physical, psycho-emotional, and energetic aspects.

The bowls work through sound and vibrations to penetrate deep into the being.

The benefits of Tibetan bowl therapy are :

  • Mental relaxation (comparable to a long meditation session)
  • An invitation to travel (through the sound of the bowls)
  • Relief from physical tensions and energizing of the body
  • Energetic cleansing and rebalancing (chakras, aura)

The goal of this technique, to benefit from all these advantages, is the continuity of the vibrations. For that, it is important to have quality bowls that provide a long and continuous vibration, but also to have a high-quality mattress or table. In my experimentation over 10 years of practice, I have tried many supports with little success. The massage table is often too small and doesn't allow proper positioning of the bowls. Traditional mattresses or futons absorb too much of the vibrations. Floor mats are uncomfortable… Until I discovered the Thai tatami mat and its comfort! Woven from straw, it is not like the judo tatami, as one might think: stiff, hard… No, these mats are soft, airy, and they conduct vibrations perfectly. Plus, they are so comfortable that you can easily meditate or lie on them for 1 to 2 hours without feeling the slightest discomfort! Since I got them, I haven’t been able to do without them, and they have replaced all the other supports for my clients.

Having been teaching sound therapy with Tibetan singing bowls for 8 years now, the tatami is what I recommend to my students for their practice in their practices! Easily storable, they are foldable and very easy to maintain! A must-have for practicing with the best equipment and in total serenity.
