Abhaibhubejhr is a Thai cooperative foundation that emerged in response to the 1997 economic crisis, which hit Thailand hard and rippled throughout Asia. As companies and banks collapsed and the Thai baht reached a record low against the dollar, a visionary pharmacist saw an opportunity to use traditional Thai medicine to support those affected and aid a struggling economy. This pharmacist taught those hit by the financial crisis how to grow medicinal herbs, leading to the establishment of the Chao Phraya Abhaibhubejhr Hospital Foundation (CAF), commonly known as Abhaibhubejhr. The foundation places a strong emphasis on fair trade, regularly purchasing herbs at fair prices from contracted farmers, thus supporting rural communities and enhancing their livelihoods. Abhaibhubejhr is also distinguished by its philosophy of "sufficiency economy." Instead of pursuing rapid, aggressive growth, the foundation develops at a moderate and sustainable pace, maintaining a balance that allows it to thrive while staying true to its values of social welfare and tradition. Dedicated to the well-being of its communities and the promotion of natural health practices, Abhaibhubejhr continues to play a vital role in advancing traditional Thai medicine, prioritizing the common good and sustainability.
